A Local’s Guide: My Favorite Places in Töölö, Helsinki
Hello and welcome to Töölö. I’d like to share some of my favorite places in this Helsinki neighborhood. Here, you’ll find a mix of quiet spots and local hangouts that give Töölö its charm.
Whether you’re looking for a calm walk or a good cup of coffee, I hope this guide helps you experience Töölö as we locals do.
My 9 Favorite Spots and Hidden Gems in Töölö
1. Hietaniemi Cemetery – A Peaceful Oasis in the City
Hietaniemi Cemetery is one of my favorite places for a walk. Although the bustle of the city can be heard in the background, I can always find peace here and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
The cemetery is just a short walk from downtown, and its tranquil atmosphere invites you to pause for a moment.
In summer, I admire the lush greenery, while in winter, the snowy landscapes bring their own special charm.
2. Lapinlahti Park – Historic Grounds by the Sea
When I want to continue my walk, I often head to the nearby Lapinlahti Park. A park spreads around the historic hospital building right by the sea.
In summer, I often stop at the rocky shore to admire the sea views or enjoy a picnic.
The park also has a charming café where it’s nice to refresh yourself during a walk.
3. Hietaniemi Beach – Sun, Sand, and City Views
Behind Hietaniemi Cemetery lies the popular Hietaniemi Beach.
On hot summer days, the beach is full of sunbathers and swimmers, but early in the morning, it’s still wonderfully peaceful.
You can also get a refreshing drink from the beach café on a hot day.
4. Kasarmi Grocery Store – Groceries in a Historic Setting
I do my daily shopping at the grocery store located in the historic Kasarmi building.
It’s neat and compact but offers a wide range of products.
There’s also a liquor store (Alko) in connection with the shop.
Behind the building, you’ll find an architecturally impressive, winding residential building designed by American architect Steven Holl.
5. Café Regatta – Red Cottage by the Sea
One of my absolute favorites in Töölö is Café Regatta, a small red café on the shore of Töölönlahti Bay. Its cozy and relaxed atmosphere attracts both locals and tourists.
I often bring my foreign guests here, as the idyllic setting and delicious cinnamon rolls leave an unforgettable impression. The place can get crowded, but queuing is worth it.
6. Jazz Club Storyville – Where Music Comes Alive
If you’re looking for a place in Töölö for live music and disco atmosphere enthusiasts, Jazz Club Storyville is the perfect choice.
This legendary club is known for its relaxed atmosphere where jazz classics and rhythmic disco hits meet. Although the space is cramped and the stairs leading downstairs are narrow, these features are exactly what make the place special.
The club attracts people of all ages, and the atmosphere is always warm and relaxed.
7. Museokatu – A Charming Street with Local Flavor
Museokatu is a charming street in Töölö. Along it, you’ll find small boutiques and charming cafés where you can stop to enjoy an unhurried atmosphere.
8. Rolling Cheese – A Gourmet’s Paradise
When I need specialty cheeses, hams, or salamis, I head to Rolling Cheese at Museokatu street.
This small shop offers a good selection of delicacies, and expert service helps you find just the right products for a special occasion or everyday enjoyment.
It is also a small wine bar (you read more about wine bars on Helsinki from our other article).
9. Home Bakery Rakas – Homemade Flavors on Limited Days
Kotileipomo Rakas is the perfect place when I want fresh, homemade-tasting pastries.
I usually come here for delicious Karelian pasties that taste like they’re homemade.
This tiny bakery is only open for limited hours from Thursday to Saturday, which makes their treats even more special when you can get them.
Summary
Töölö stands out as Helsinki’s most popular and sought-after district among locals.
Its appeal stems from its prime location near the city center, combined with the beauty of nearby sea and the parks.
While not the most expensive area in Helsinki, Töölö is certainly among the pricier neighborhoods, reflecting its desirability.
Beyond the my favorites mentioned above, Töölö is home to some of Helsinki’s most notable attractions:
- The Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the “Rock Church,” is one of the city’s most visited sites, renowned for its unique architecture carved into solid rock.
- Near Cafe Regatta, you’ll find the striking Sibelius Monument, dedicated to the famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.
Both of these landmarks, along with other Töölö attractions, are convenient stops on Helsinki’s Hop-on Hop-off bus routes and local trams, making the district easily accessible for tourists.
