A Day Trip to Fiskars: A Blend of History, Nature, and Craftsmanship
Just an hour’s drive from Helsinki, the charming village of Fiskars offers an ideal destination for a day trip, whether traveling solo, with friends, or with family. This picturesque locale presents a delightful mix of history, nature, artisanal traditions, and excellent cuisine.
We made this trip in July, so here are our insights.
Founded 1649 as an ironworks, Fiskars has evolved from an industrial community into a thriving center of culture and art.
The village exudes a relaxed atmosphere, inviting visitors to explore its historical buildings, savor local delicacies, and discover exquisite handicrafts and artwork at their own pace.
Getting to Fiskars
By Car
The most convenient way to reach Fiskars is by car, with the journey from Helsinki’s city center taking approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The route begins on a highway before transitioning to a two-lane country road.
Be aware that this stretch often experiences heavy traffic and is monitored by speed cameras. Wildlife, particularly deer, is common along this route.
For a pleasant break during your journey, consider stopping at the quaint Cafe Wilhelsdal in Inkoo’s harbor or the charming roadside farm cafe Lill-Breds Cafe.
Parking
Fiskars offers free parking throughout the village, with two large parking areas and several smaller lots.
The “Tori” parking lot above the village is the most convenient option as it’s closest to the village center and provides access to public restrooms.
Public Transportation
While public transport options are limited, you can reach Fiskars by taking a train or bus to the nearby town of Karjaa, followed by a local bus or taxi for the final 15-kilometer stretch to Fiskars.

Opening Hours and Seasonal Tips
The village area is open year-round, and shops and workshops are free to access. However, some events, museums, and exhibitions may charge admission fees.
The best time to visit is from June to August, as the village is considerably quieter during winter, except for special events like the Christmas markets.
Notable annual events include the Antique Fair in early July (€10 admission), the Slow Food Festival in early October, and the Christmas markets starting from the last weekend of November.

Accommodation
While Fiskars is perfect for a day trip, those wishing to extend their stay can choose from two hotels in the village center: the newly opened The Torby and the small, historic Fiskars Wärdshus.
Fiskars Wärdshus is Finland’s oldest continuously operating inn, operating since 1836.
Additional options, including rental apartments and cottages, can be found in the surrounding areas through platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com.

Village History
Established in 1649 as an ironworks, Fiskars initially produced cast iron and forged items. By the 19th century, it had become a significant industrial center, renowned for its high-quality tools.
Fiskars Village is part of the Finnish Fiskars company, one of the world’s oldest continuously operating businesses. It is now globally recognized for its kitchen utensils, garden tools, and Scandinavian design.
Ironworks Area and Architecture
The area’s buildings primarily showcase 19th-century industrial architecture. Red brick structures, lush parks, and beautifully restored wooden houses create an idyllic environment and a unique atmosphere, making Fiskars a perfect day trip destination.
Craft Workshops and Galleries
Several galleries, including Onoma Shop & Gallery, display local and international art and design in the village.
Fiskars Museum
To learn more about the area’s history, visit the Fiskars Museum (admission fee applies), which offers stories, exhibitions, and work demonstrations.

Workshops
Many artists and craftspeople in Fiskars operate open workshops. You can observe their work and participate in various activities, including glassblowing, ceramics, metalwork, and woodworking.
Guided Tours
From June 26 to August 11, 2024, guided walking tours are available Wednesday to Sunday at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM. These 40-minute tours, starting from the village information point (Old Fire Station), are offered in Finnish, Swedish, and English. Participation is by voluntary donation, and no advance booking is required.
Nature Trails
You can explore the beautiful surrounding nature on the marked 2 km tree species trail or the 4 km forest trail.
A Refreshing Escape – Flacksjö Beach
If you are looking for a cool respite during your Fiskars visit, the small Flacksjö beach offers a lovely retreat.
It is a genuinely Finnish lake experience. The lake’s clear waters invite you for a refreshing swim on warm summer days.
The beach is located at Flacksjöntie 50, 10440 Bollsta, and is easily accessible by car via a short gravel road.
If you are adventurous, you can walk there via a 3-kilometer hike through the Finnish forest.
The beach area offers only basic amenities, such as changing cabins and an outdoor toilet near the parking spot.
Family-Friendly Activities
Fiskars caters to children with attractions like an adventure ship playground, hands-on experiences at the Fiskars Museum, and family-friendly nature trails.
Mountain Biking
The area offers about 60 kilometers of marked mountain biking trails varying in difficulty. A small bike rental service is available for those without their own equipment.
Dining in Fiskars
Fiskars offers a range of dining options, from casual eateries to fine dining experiences:
Restaurant Kuparipaja: By the rapids of the Fiskars River, this is our favorite. It is mid-priced, and vegetarian options are also available.
Gastro Café Lavanderia: Our second favorite is the uncomplicated Gastro Café, which has the most relaxed courtyard terrace in the area. The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is cozy.
Café Antique: This bun-smelling café is in the center of the village and also has an antique shop. It is an excellent choice for a coffee break and has moderate prices.
Waldemar Pizza Bar: This summer restaurant just below the center offers pizzas fitted by a Michelin restaurateur. Pizza prices are higher than average, but the quality is guaranteed.
Fiskars Wärdshus: The finest restaurant in connection with the historic hotel Wärdshus. The price level is high, but you can enjoy gourmet dishes in a historical setting.
Shopping Opportunities
Fiskars Village offers unique shopping experiences, including local artisans’s ceramics, glass art, and textiles.
The area features several galleries and design shops showcasing local and Finnish design products.
The Fiskars factory outlet is located in the center of the village.
Regular markets also allow visitors to purchase handmade products directly from the artisans.
